In a new paper from our project Vincent Dolmans and colleagues analyzed field observations and dietary data from water birds in temporary wetlands to investigate the role of large branchiopod crustaceans, such as fairy shrimps, in their diets. They found that these crustaceans are a significant and seasonally abundant food source, highlighting their ecological importance for wetland bird communities.

Dolmans, V. (2025). Dietary data suggest large branchiopods may be an underrecognised food resource for a wide range of waterbirds. Hydrobiologia. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10750-025-05810-8
